Relationship with the City of Des Moines

The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, leases its property from the City of Des Moines. Originally built in the late 1970s by the city, the conservatory and greenhouses operated from 1979 through 2012 under the name Des Moines Botanical Center. On January 1, 2013, the board of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden assumed operatorship of the facility and changed the name to reflect a new vision for the future of one of Iowa's most recognizable attractions.

In addition to operating, leading and expanding the former Botanical Center, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden receives operating support from the city through 2023, in addition to partnering to maintain the landscape adjacent to the John Pat Dorrian Trail.
