Summer Camp 2017

Monday, June 19 2017 thru Friday, August 18 2017

A day camp designed for children ages 6-8 to explore the wide world of plants through innovative, hands-on learning. Using the gardens as unique classrooms, children are inspired to create and explore.

9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Dates and Themes:

June 19-23, Garden Artists  

Let the Botanical Garden’s plant collection serve as inspiration to young artists! Children will have the chance to explore and create with a unique array of mediums from painting to printing to flower arranging. This week will feature special presentations from the Des Moines Art Center and the Des Moines Social Club.

July 10-14, Junior Botanists  

Science takes a step outside during this week of camp with children exploring the world of plants through a new lens. From planting to science experiments to exploring ecosystems, this week will open up a whole new side of the garden. Special guest presenters include the Science Center of Iowa.

July 17-21, Budding Chefs (1 SPOT LEFT)

What better way to appreciate the bounty of a garden than by cooking with fresh produce? Children will not only have the chance to prepare and taste dishes, but to plant and care for the garden that their ingredients come from during this exciting week of camp that celebrates the tastier side of plants!

August 7-11, Prairie Naturalists

Iowa is home to one of the most diverse and interesting ecosystems on earth - the prairie! During this week of camp, children will explore this landscape from native plants to visiting pollinators and then be inspired to create and experiment. Special guest presenters include Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge.

August 14-18, Outdoor Explorers (FULL)

Seven acres of outdoor gardens and a tropical conservatory are just the beginning of what children will explore during this week of camp! From plants to animals, activities to demonstrations, this is the camp for the curious nature lover. This week will feature special presentations from the Blank Park Zoo and the ISU Insect Zoo.
