Looking for a fun family experience over Winter Break?

Join us for an array of drop-in activities (December 27-30) and special workshops (December 27-30). Drop-in activities (held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) are free with your paid admission.  

Family Workshops

The family workshops are the perfect opportunity for families to have a creative experience at the Botanical Garden. These hands-on classes are designed for youth ages 4-14 and an adult to build a take-home project together. Please note one adult is required for every three youth participants. Nature Jewelry, Dec 27, 10–11:15 a.m. and 2 – 3:15 p.m.

Use an array of natural materials, beads and plants to create wearable art. 

Fairy Gardening, Dec 28, 10–11:15 a.m. FULL and 2 – 3:15 p.m. FULL

Join us for a mystical experience and create your own miniature world with plants and other natural materials to attract fairies to your home.

Air Plant Sculptures, Dec 29, 10–11:15 a.m. FULL and 2- 3:15 p.m.

Create mobiles, wreaths, or displays in this fun workshop that explores these unusual plants.

Fern String Gardens, Dec 30, 10–11:15 a.m. and 2- 3:15 p.m.

Create unique hanging string gardens with the Japanese art of Kokedama. 

Members: $20 Youth/Adult Pair, $15 Additional Youth 

Nonmembers: $25 Youth/Adult Pair, $20 Additional Youth      


Drop-in Activities:

Scent-sational Tropicals: See a demo of rainforest herbs and spices, try to identify them, and learn more about their culinary uses.

Tropical Planting Activity: Plant your very own tropical plant to take home.

Rainforest Pollinator Headbands: Use natural and craft materials to create a cute headband that looks like your favorite pollinator.

Conservatory Bingo: Participants will be given a card with 12 pictures of conservatory plant species, then explore the conservatory to try to find as many as possible! 

Leaf Tracing: Eplore the amazing diversity of rainforest species by tracing leaves to compare and contrast shapes and sizes.

Story Time with Rosie the Reader: Engage in a fun, interactive storytime with Rosie the Reader from the Des Moines Public Library Dec. 29 from 10:30-11 a.m.!
