Fall Perennial & Bulb Market Preview
We’re excited to bring back our bulb market in 2020 along with a selection of perennials that are perfect for fall planting, too. Below you’ll find five plants to watch for at the Fall Perennial & Bulb Market, from the very first blooms of the season to selections that carry on well into the fall. Read on for a glimpse of what the sale will include, and get ready to make your selections!
1. Galanthus nivalis ‘Magnet’
It’s no secret we love snowdrops; it doesn’t take much for us to get excited for spring after a long Iowa winter. ‘Magnet’ is one of the more vigorous selections for the Upper Midwest, multiplying rapidly to form sizable colonies with big flowers.
2. Allium ‘Forelock’ (Forelock ornamental onion):
A relative newcomer among Alliums, this favorite sort of reminds us of Wilson from Castaway with its shaggy dark purple florets. It’s a head-turning companion in the Wells Fargo Rose Garden.
3. Tulipa acuminata (flame tulip)
If you’re going to plant tulips, why not plant the most exotic of them all? With yellow and red inscribed petals, these flowers set fire to the May garden, a strong counteract to the pastels of the season.
4. Schizachyrium scoparium ‘Standing Ovation’ (Standing Ovation little bluestem)
The horticulture team’s favorite little bluestem is used in the Rutledge Conifer Garden and hillside garden for its rigidly upright habit and four seasons of interest. It’s always popular at our plant sales, so be sure to put it in your cart ASAP!
5. Liatris ligulistylis ‘Butterfly Magnet’ (Butterfly Magnet blazingstar)
Monarch butterflies love this species of blazingstar. Its late summer and early fall bloom season makes it a critical waystation for migrating butterflies as they begin their journeys south.
