The staff, volunteers and board of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden are deeply grateful for your support during our closure. We hope you have felt connected to the world of plants via our social media channels, virtual course offerings and free activities and resources these past three months.

Today, we’re excited to share our reopening plans.

The health, safety and comfort of our guests, staff and volunteers are our highest priorities. We have implemented numerous policies and procedures in accordance with current health guidelines and best practices (detailed below), and appreciate your support and partnership in adhering to these protocols to protect the wellbeing of all.

Reopening Policies and Procedures

In order to welcome you back safely, we have enacted new social distancing, cleaning and hygiene protocols and are restricting access to most indoor spaces.

  • Admission will be exclusively by advanced online reservation/timed ticketing through the Garden’s website at dmbotanicalgarden.com or over the phone by calling 515.323.6290. Entry is not guaranteed to those who arrive without a ticket, with the exception of members, Iowa Libraries Adventure Pass participants, Museums for All participants and Pineapple Program token holders.
  • Those using their membership or alternate admission options do not need to reserve a timed ticket. Instead, please present your membership card or appropriate token, pass or EBT card upon arrival. Learn more about free admission options here.
  • Timed tickets are now available for 10-11:30 a.m., 12-1:30 p.m., 2-3:30 p.m. and 3:30-5 p.m. As of Aug. 1, timed tickets will be available from 10-1:30 p.m. and 1:30-5 p.m.
  • The number of guests allowed in during each block will be capped to ensure appropriate social distancing guidelines.
  • Guests will enter through the outdoor entrance to Trellis Café and exit through the Lauridsen Savanna.
  • Groups should not exceed five (5) people unless direct family members.
  • Access to buildings will be limited to restrooms only. Drinking fountains will not be accessible, so please bring your own water.
  • Face coverings are required at all times, excluding children under age 2. Guests will not be allowed entry without adequate face covering.
  • Maintain a 6-foot distance between yourself and others not in your group.
  • Do not visit the Garden if you are ill, exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 or have received a positive test for COVID-19 in the last 14 days; if anyone in your household is ill, exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 or have received a positive test for COVID-19 in the last 14 days; or if you have been in contact with anyone who is ill, exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 or have received a positive test for COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
  • Trellis Café is open for lunch Wednesday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a limited menu, including grab-and-go offerings, with outdoor and indoor seating. Guests are also invited to bring a blanket to enjoy their lunch in the Garden. Trellis will also offer online ordering during this time.
  • High touch surfaces throughout the Garden, including the restrooms and door handles, will be regularly cleaned and sanitized throughout the day to enhance hygiene and safety.

How do I purchase tickets?

How does timed ticketing work?
Timed ticketing provides a specific window of time for you to visit the Garden so that we may maintain proper social distancing and attendance guidelines.

How long can I stay with a timed ticket?
You may remain in the Garden for up to 1.5 hours.

What if I arrive early or late, or miss my time slot?
We will make every effort to allow you into the Garden when you arrive based on current attendance, but we cannot guarantee admission for early or late arrivals.

Do you accept any walk-ups?
Entry is not guaranteed to those without a reserved ticket, with the exception of members and Library Adventure Pass participants. On-site ticket purchases are subject to availability and must be made via credit card.

Can I receive a refund if there is bad weather on the day of my visit?
Garden tickets are non-refundable, but you may contact us at info@dmbotanicalgarden.com to reschedule your visit.

I’m a member. Do I need to reserve a ticket?
No, as of July 20, members do not need to reserve tickets in advance. Please bring your membership card with you when you visit.

Does every person need a ticket?
In order to ensure we maintain a safe level of attendance, every person entering must have a ticket.

Are you accepting free passes, American Horticultural Society Reciprocal Admissions Program, Museums for All, or Library Adventure Pass program admission at this time?
Yes, we are excited to welcome you back! Guests visiting via Museums for All or the Iowa Libraries Adventure Pass Program do not need to reserve tickets in advance.

Do I need to print my tickets?
No, you do not need to print your tickets in advance. Simply show us the confirmation email on your phone or give your name upon arrival.

What will I be able to see?
Our outdoor gardens are open at this time. The conservatory and indoor portions of our Garden experience remain closed.

Do I have to wear a mask?
All guests above the age of 2 are required to wear a mask.

What is there to eat?
Trellis Café is open for lunch Wednesday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a limited menu, including grab-and-go offerings, with outdoor and indoor seating. Guests are also invited to bring a blanket to enjoy their lunch in the Garden. Trellis will also offer online ordering during this time.

Are there restrooms available?
Yes, you may access restrooms via the doors near the Dorothy and Max Rutledge Conifer and Gravel and Koehn Gardens.

Are there drinking fountains?
Our drinking fountains are not turned on; please bring your own water.

Will you have wheelchairs, strollers and umbrellas available?
In an effort to minimize contact, please bring your own wheelchairs, strollers and umbrellas.

Is the Garden Shop open?
The Garden Shop will not be open, but select items are available at dmbotanicalgarden.com/shop.

When will you start holding in-person events?
We do not currently have a set date for holding in-person events. We are continually evaluating current conditions and following the recommendations of the City of Des Moines, state and federal guidelines. Please visit dmbotanicalgarden.com regularly for updates.

How can I share photos of my visit?

How can I become a member?
Visit dmbotanicalgarden.com/membership for unlimited admission year-round. Use the code SUMMER for $15 off any level of new membership through July 31, 2020.

While we have done everything we can to implement the necessary safety protocols and procedures, the risk of exposure to COVID-19 unfortunately exists in any public group setting. You will be visiting at your own risk. Please use your judgement as to whether you are comfortable visiting the Garden. If you’re not, we understand and look forward to welcoming you back when the time is right.
