Thursday Summer Concert Series
June 13-Sept. 26, 2019

Social Irrigation is a 15-week long summer program of Thursday night concerts in the Garden, featuring a new band, food, craft beer and lawn games each week. Trellis Café will be open with small plates and your favorite beverage. The variety of musical genre in the series will provide something for every musical taste. Botanically inspired activities include a DIY boutonniere bar, terrarium demos and cooking and mixing drinks with fresh herbs. Event held rain or shine. Seating is provided, but outside chairs are also permitted.

June 13: Tony Valdez and the Rockets

  • Favorites from the ’60s,’70s and more.
  • Pop-up: Boutonniere Bar + Ask a Master Gardener: Select a variety of flowers for a personal boutonniere and learn the meanings behind the flowers you choose. Also, ask a Master Gardener for advice about your own garden.
  • Kids’ Activity: Flower Plate Rubbings

June 20: Diplomats of Solid Sound (performance will include album release)

  • The funk and soul group from Iowa City will play new songs from their upcoming album, “A Higher Place.”
  • Pop-up: Honeybees
  • Kids’ Activity: Pollinator Match Game

June 27: Parranderos Latin Combo

  • Vibrant, diverse salsa and Latin dance music.
  • Pop-up: Coleus + Artist in the Garden: Learn about our extensive coleus collection from Botanical Garden staff and volunteers. Also, watch and learn from artists as they capture the beauty of the summer garden.
  • Kids’ Activity: Leaf Run-off and Chlorophyll Meter

July 11: NOLA Jazz Band

  • New Orleans and roots-blues-influenced jazz.
  • Pop-up: Blender Bike + Ask a Master Gardener: In a new spin on one of our favorite activities, help make some fresh fruit salsa using person-powered blender bicycle, courtesy of FoodCorps Iowa. Also, ask a Master Gardener for advice about your own garden.
  • Kids’ Activity: Scavenger Hunt

July 18: Chad Elliott and the Redemptions

  • A combination of roots-rock, soul and blues music.
  • Pop-up: Templeton Rye + Aroma Therapy
  • Kids’ Activity: Scented Geraniums

July 25: Gina Gedler Quartet

  • Pop-up: Herb Study Group + Artist in the Garden: Watch and learn from artists as they capture the beauty of the summer garden.
  • Kids’ Activity: Puzzles + Games

Aug. 1: The Center State

  • A blend of acoustic pop, troubadour and Americana music.
  • Pop-up: Madison County Winery + Ask a Master Gardener: Sample an assortment of wines and learn about the wine-making process and vineyard. Also, ask a Master Gardener for advice about your own garden.
  • Kids’ Activity: Botanical Books

Aug. 8: Java Jews

  • Highly caffeinated klezmer music.
  • Pop-up: Canning with Kim
  • Kids’ Activity: Sensory Table + Plant Petting Zoo

Aug. 15: The Maytags

  • Blues and funk that fuses jazz with old-school soul.
  • Pop-up: Salsa Bike: Help make some fresh salsa using vegetables from the Garden and a person powered blender bicycle, courtesy of FoodCorps Iowa.
  • Kids’ Activity: Puzzles + Games

Aug. 22: Moors and McCumber

  • Elements of various American roots music styles, including country, roots-rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B and blues.
  • Pop-up: Iowa Brewer’s Union: Sample an assortment of home-brewed beer and learn about the beer-making process.
  • Kids’ Activity: Scavenger Hunt

Aug. 29: Parranderos Latin Combo

  • Enjoy a performance by the lead from the band, The Maytags.
  • Pop-up: Brenton Arboretum + Ask a Master Gardener: Ask a Master Gardener for advice about your own garden.
  • Kids’ Activity: Leaf Plate Rubbings

Sept. 12: Kevin Burt

  • Iowa-based International Blues Challenge award winner.
  • Pop-up: Monarch Migration + Iowa Bonsai Association
  • Kids’ Activity: Pollinator Match Game

Sept. 19: Victor and Penny

  • Swing-infused folk-jazz rooted in the riff-driven Kansas City style, delivered with class, joy, and soaring musical improvisation.
  • Pop-up: Lauridsen Savanna: Visit with staff and volunteers who work with the Lauridsen Savanna and learn about this garden that is inspired by the rolling landscape of Iowa’s natural history.
  • Kids’ Activity: Botanical Books

Sept. 26: Max Wellman sings the music of Cole Porter

  • Max Wellman is known for his sound, evoking the likes of Sinatra and Connick.
  • Pop-up: Boutonniere Bar + Artist in the Garden: Select a variety of flowers for a personal boutonniere and learn the meanings behind the flowers you choose. Also, watch and learn from artists as they capture the beauty of the summer garden.
